Gustav Fröhlich was born in 1902 in German Samoa. Gustav Fröhlich was known to be a German-Australian swimmer and swimming coach but died on April 17, 1968, in Sydney, Australia. Earlier in the 1920s, he was a member of the SC Hellas swimming club in Magdeburg.
With respect to his career as a swimmer, it must be noted that Gustav Fröhlich competed in the 100-meter backstroke and set a world record of 1.14 minutes. This was on October 2, 1921. So far as the German Championships are concerned, Gustav Fröhlich is said to have been the 100-meter backstroke champion five times and this was between 1921 and 1926.
He also has two European medals to his credit. He won the Gold medal at the 1926 European Championships that was held at Budapest. He also won the bronze medal in 1927 in the backstroke event. Gustav Fröhlich during the 1930s migrated to Australia.
While in Australia, he became a swimming coach and coached Lorraine Crapp to win two gold records at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. Faith Leech was also coached by Gustav Fröhlich. Faith Leech was successful at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. Gustav Fröhlich coached Judy-Joy Davies who subsequently won a medal at the London Olympics in 1948.
