Grete Bergers Biography
Grete Berger, born Margarethe Berg on February 11, 1883, was a talented Austrian-German stage and film actress.
The ascent of the Nazi Party in 1933 marked the abrupt end of Grete Berger’s bright career. Sadly, not long after arriving at the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944, Berger was murdered.
Born into a Jewish family in Silesia, Austria, Berger trained as an actress in Vienna, first under Rosa Roth. At the Deutsches Theatre in Berlin, she made her stage debut in 1903, and her youthful character performances quickly won her praise.
Due to her talent, Berger was able to participate in several works with Max Reinhardt’s ensemble, such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare and Oedipus Rex by Sophocles.
Apart from her theatrical career, Berger also dabbled in silent film, establishing her reputation as the lead female character in the horror movie The Student of Prague in 1913.
She was cast in multiple other films by renowned filmmaker Stellan Rye, establishing her reputation as a gifted performer on the big and small screen.
But the start of World War I forced Berger to return to the theatre, and in the 1920s, she starred in several motion pictures, notably Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. Regrettably, the 1933 anti-Semitic legislation and regulations imposed by the Nazis ended her career.
After making their way to Italy, Berger and her husband were detained in 1944 by German occupation forces. They were sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz, where Berger and her longtime partner, Jacob Feldhammer, were killed not long after they arrived.
The atrocities of the Holocaust sadly destroyed Grete Berger’s ability and potential, yet her legacy as a gifted actress endures. Her achievements in film and theatre will never be forgotten.
