The honourable Speaker of Parliament; Alban Bagbin, while speaking to members of the house on February 24, 2022 has made a shocking disclosure.
Bagbin’s revelation came as a result of cautioning members of the public sector to brace themselves for such crisis. According to him, the government has no revenue to enable them honour certain financial obligations which includes paying the salaries of workers in the public sector.
The speaker wasn’t clear about the reason that triggered the revelation but in making the disclosure,he stated; “This is not to discourage the committee from doing their work. If something is not done within the next three months, the government may not be able to even pay salaries.”
However, the speaker’s statement comes amidst the government’s fight to approve the e-levy bill. Many members of the majority caucus have threatened certain social interventions like “free shs scheme” shall be scrapped off if the e-levy isn’t approved.
The government is is also engaging the minority caucus in consensus building. And Ghanaians are being sensitized and educated about the importance of the taxation through “town hall meetings”.
