Gerold Tandler has had a political career that has spanned over two decades, during which he held significant positions within the CSU and Bavarian governments.

Despite facing challenges and controversy, Tandler’s contributions to politics and his service to the state of Bavaria will be remembered.

Gerold Tandler’s Biography

Gerold Tandler was born on August 12th, 1936, in Reichenberg, Czechoslovakia. He is a former German politician of the CSU (Christian Social Union).

Tandler had a successful political career, serving in a variety of roles and holding key positions within the party.

Tandler began his studies as a dental technician, but he later changed his mind and enrolled as a banker at the Bayerische Vereinsbank. He was employed with the bank until 1971.

Tandler joined the CSU in 1956, which marked the start of his political career. He held several political positions in the Altötting district, including district chairman of the Junge Union.

Gerold was chastised for his involvement with right-wing radicals and for trivialising the Oktoberfest incident. In addition, there were journalistic and public criticisms of his management of the squatter movement.

Tandler’s career took off after he was elected to the Bavarian State Parliament in 1970. From 1971 to 1978, he was also the CSU’s general secretary. During this time, he had a close relationship with his long-time tutor, Franz Josef Strauß.

Tandler was named Bavarian State Minister for the Interior in Strauß’s first administration in 1978. He held this role until 1982 and was noted for being tough on the emerging alternative youth culture. Tandler also served in the German Bundestag during his political career.

Tandler became chairman of the CSU state parliamentary group in 1982, demonstrating his leadership talents within the party.

From 1983 until 1988, he also served as the CSU’s general secretary. In 1988, he was also appointed as the Bavarian Minister of Economy and Transport.

Tandler was appointed Minister of State for Finance in the Streibl I cabinet after the tragic death of Franz Josef Strauß in October 1988.

Tandler’s political career, however, was harmed by the Zwick scandal. Eduard Zwick, a businessman known as the “Bäderkönig” (Baths King) of Lower Bavaria, had loaned him money.

Tandler had used these loans to acquire and renovate an Altötting hotel. Tandler was accused of making an unsworn false statement and helping Zwick’s tax evasion during the Zwick probe. However, in September 2000, the Landshut Regional Court dropped both allegations.

Tandler opted to leave politics after the Zwick scandal and pursue a business career. He joined the Linde AG board of directors and served until his retirement in 2001.

Tandler is a family man outside of his political profession. He is a father of four daughters and two sons. Andrea Tandler, one of his daughters, rose to prominence as a result of her involvement in the “mask affair” and subsequent imprisonment.

Tandler gained accolades and honours for his achievements during his career. In 1980, he was awarded the Bavarian Beer Order, demonstrating his dedication to Bavarian culture.

In 1981, he received the Large Federal Cross of Merit for his great service to the state. Tandler was awarded the Bavarian Constitutional Medal in gold in 1984, solidifying his place in Bavarian politics. In addition, he received the Large Federal Cross of Merit with a star.
