Gerhard Hetz was a German swimmer and swimming coach who lived between July 13 , 1942, and May 19, 2012. It must be noted that Gerhard Hetz has at least an Olympic silver and bronze medal to his credit. When he was active as a swimmer, he was able to set two world records, eleven European records and 43 German records.
Gerhard Hetz won the bronze medal in the 400 m individual medley at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and also won the silver medal in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. It must be noted that on May 24, 1962, and October 12, 1963, Gerhard Hetz set world records in the world record in the 400-meter individual medley.
He held the European record for the 200-meter freestyle between August 13, 1961, and October 13, 1963. Interestingly, Gerhard Hetz won a total of 27 German championship titles between 1960 and 1966.
Between 1959 and 1964 in Germany, no one could defeat him in the 1500 m freestyle. He was crowned Germany’s athlete of the year in 1962 and 1963. After retiring from active swimming, he went into coaching and handled swimming teams such as Blau-Weiß Bochum, SSF Bonn (1968–1973) [2] and SV Rhenania Köln (1975–1991).
He trained the likes of Werner Lampe, Rainer Henkel and Peter Sitt. Gerhard Hetz was quite a controversial coach. In 1997, he was appointed coach at the Cologne/Bonn/Leverkusen Olympic Training Center.
