Friederike von Alvensleben’s Biography
German actress Friederike Caroline von Alvensleben, formerly Friederike Caroline Döbbelin, had a big influence on the theatre in the eighteenth century.
Her roots were not entirely certain, although family history held that she was born in Brussels on March 5, 1749, into the Alsatian von Klinglin family and raised in a monastery.
Young Friederike became involved in the theatre company of Karl Theophil Döbbelin, whom she eventually married in 1762 as Anna Catharina Friderici.
The marriage ended in divorce in 1776, but the couple did have a son. Following that, Friederike entered into a second marriage with Chamberlain Johann Friedrich von Alvensleben, the brother of Gebhard XXVIII, the district administrator.
Friederike portrayed prominent roles in plays by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing during her career, including “Emilia Galotti” and “Minna von Barnhelm.” Her coworkers complimented her on her talent and beauty, calling her a thin and beautiful woman.
Following her second marriage, Friederike left the theatre and moved to Vienau, then Redekin, to reside with her family.
Together with Johann Friedrich von Alvensleben, she gave birth to six children, one of whom, Eduard von Alvensleben, would go on to become a district administrator. Friederike died on 10 April 1799 and is interred in the Redekin village church churchyard beside her second husband.
Her grandson, writer Ludwig von Alvensleben, carries on her legacy, and her contributions to German-speaking theater in Germany are acknowledged as noteworthy accomplishments.
