Francine Joy Drescher, born in Flushing, Queens, New York City, on September 30, 1957, is a well-known American comedian, producer, writer, and director in cinema and television. Her many abilities have led to nominations for major honors including the Golden Globe and the Emmy Award.

Early Life and Career

Fran Drescher’s journey into the entertainment industry began against the backdrop of her multicultural heritage, with Russian, Jewish, and Italian roots. Raised in Queens alongside her older sister, Drescher attended high school, where she crossed paths with her future husband, Peter Marc Jacobson. Graduating in 1975, she enrolled at Queens College to pursue acting while concurrently attending cosmetology school. Soon after, she established her hairdressing salon.

Even though Drescher frequently showed up for casting calls, her big break came in 1977 when she was hired in a supporting part with John Travolta in “Saturday Night Fever.” She had a big part alongside Jay Leno in the movie “American Hot Wax” the next year.

Drescher proceeded with her venture into television movies, making noteworthy cameos with her spouse in “UHF” (1989) and “This is Spinal Tap” (1984). Her co-creation, production, and acting role in the comedy “The Nanny,” which ran on CBS from 1993 to 1999, was a turning point in her career.

Following the success of “The Nanny,” Drescher diversified her career with roles in various films, including “Picking Up the Pieces” (2000) with Woody Allen. However, in the same year, she faced a significant personal challenge when diagnosed with cervical cancer. Detecting the disease in its early stages allowed for successful surgery without the need for chemotherapy. Drescher candidly shared her experience in her second book, “Cancer Schmancer,” and founded the Cancer Schmancer organization in 2007, aiming to promote early cancer detection in women.

In 2005, she starred in the television series “Living with Fran” on The WB, which ran for two seasons. Over the years, Drescher made guest appearances in popular series like “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and “The Simpsons.”

Drescher’s daytime talk show, “The Fran Drescher Show,” had a brief run in 2010. From 2011 to 2013, she led the sitcom “Happily Divorced,” based on her own life experiences. Drescher continued to contribute to animated films, voicing Eunice in the “Hotel Transylvania” series.

In 2020, she returned to regular television programming with the sitcom “Indebted.” However, the show concluded after its initial 12-episode run.

In September 2021, she assumed the role of president of SAG-AFTRA, a union representing approximately 160,000 workers in film, television, and radio. Her tenure included steering the American Actor strike that commenced on July 14, 2023.
