Biography
Folkert Meeuw was born on November 11, 1946, in Wiesbaden, Germany. Folkert Meeuw moved into teaching following his time as a swimmer. He began teaching biology and athletics at the German Higher Private School in Windhoek in 1985 and remained there until 1989. He then went on to teach biology and athletics at the Wilhelm Heinrich von Riehl School in Wiesbaden and the Carl von Ossietzky School in Wiesbaden.
With a total of 15 victories in German championships, while competing at Wasserfreunde Wuppertal, Folkert Meeuw made a lasting impression on German swimming. His skills carried over to the European scene, where he was quite successful.
Meeuw won silver in the 200-meter butterfly and the 4 × 100-meter freestyle relay at the 1970 European Swimming Championships in Barcelona. He also helped the 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay teams win. He added a bronze in the 100-meter butterfly and a gold in the 4 × 200 m freestyle and 4 × 100 m medley relays at the 1974 Vienna championships.
Meeuw’s achievements included qualifying for the 200-meter butterfly finals at the Mexico City Olympic Games in 1968 and the Munich Olympic Games in 1972, when she placed eighth. Remarkably, as the last swimmer in the 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay at the 1973 World Swimming Championships, he won a bronze medal. His greatest accomplishment was during the 1975 World Swimming Championships in Cali, where he won a world championship in the 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay as the lead swimmer.
On November 30, 1970, Folkert Meeuw received the Silver Laurel Leaf in honor of his many triumphs and exceptional achievements in swimming.
