The minister of finance during a town hall meeting on Friday, March 4, 2022 in the Volta Region has revealed that, the government scrapping off tolls have become “a chain around our neck.”
Hon. Ken Ofori-Atta during a town hall meeting on Friday, March 4, 2022 in the Volta Region revealed that the cancellation of toll collection is “a chain around our necks”.
Mr Ofori-Atta said: “The challenge really is: we passed the appropriation very quickly because there was an absolute belief in the direction that we were going and then the politics came to stall the issue of the revenue measure, which is e-levy, and, therefore, the issue of the tolls being disbanded has become a chain around our necks”.
However, the roads minister whose entity single handedly scraped off the tolls at the 38 tollbooths across the country says it’s the best as there were several quarrels between road users and the collectors.
The e-levy was part of the government’s budget for 2022 and since it’s introduction has received several backlashes from the minority caucus in parliament, some renowned institutions and the populous of Ghanaians.
