Even though the educational system in Ghana is dominated by public-funded schools, whether affiliated to missionaries or otherwise, there exists a number of private schools or institutions that have over the years stood out among the rest.

The Roman Ridge School Emblem

One of these schools is The Roman Ridge School. Founded in 2002, the Roman Ridge School is a private co-educational institution, popularly referred to in Ghana as a “mixed school.”

The school’s educational curriculum is based on the British Preparatory and Independent School System. Despite this, the Roman Ridge School prides itself in being firmly rooted in Ghanaian culture and tradition as it occasionally organizes events to celebrate the cultural heritage of Ghana.

The School’s Sub-Divisions

The Roman Ridge School is divided into three schools. Each of these schools caters to the educational needs of students as per the particular age range they belong to although the school generally accepts candidates from the ages of 4 to 18. The composition of the school constitutes;

  • The Junior School
  • The Middle School
  • The Senior School

The Junior School

The Junior School covers the first stages of primary education at The Roman Ridge School. It runs from the stage known as the “Reception” up to class 4 and focuses on delivering lessons in numeracy and literacy in a rigorous, fun, and engaging program.

The Middle School

The Middle School runs through years 5 and 6 and Forms 1 and 2. At this stage, the school seeks to build on the foundation created at the Junior School by helping students to develop critical thinking, evaluation, and analysis skills whilst nurturing public speaking skills.

Also, social activities are organized to give students the proper opportunities to socialize with other students including those of foreign nationalities and cultures.

Forms 1 and 2 of The Middle School utilize the ISEB Common Entrance syllabus. It is widely regarded as an excellent foundation to Cambridge IGCSE and provides a head start for pupils over their peers in preparing for the next stage of their education.

Pupils are taught by Specialist Subject Teachers and the subjects examined include: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, French and Religious Education. Information Technology, Art, Music, PE are assessed internally and based on the requirements of the Keys Stage 3 curriculum.

The Senior School

The Senior School begins at Form 3 and ends at Form 5. This stage is admittedly more challenging than the other stages as IGSE courses are introduced to the students.

Students as this stage are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their studies outside the classroom and are encouraged to engage in research, to critically evaluate materials and use evidence as well as apply their knowledge in their presentations.

Students are also taught design thinking. In Form 4, students are allowed to choose between 7 and 9 subjects, a combination of compulsory and elective subjects, to study in their preparation for the AS/A Level qualifications.  Students who pass the Sixth Form get to go ahead to take the 2-year AS or A Level qualification.

How to Get into The Roman Ridge School

Students willing to get admission are asked to pick admission forms for the school, provide the necessary information and await contact from the school. When a vacancy is available, prospective students are invited to take an entrance exam. Candidates who pass are admitted subject to payment of fees.
