Ernst Kuppers can be described as a German backstroke swimmer who was born on July 9, 1904. He however died on July 24, 1976. Ernst Kuppers represented Germany at the 1928 Summer Olympics. He also participated in the 1932 Summer Olympics. It must be noted that he was born in Viersen but died in Nordhorn.
It must be noted that in 1928, Ernst Kuppers competed in the 100-meter backstroke competition. He finished in the fifth position. Four years later, he again finished in the fifth position in the same 100-meter backstroke competition.
During the 1934 European Championships in Magdeburg, Hitler commissioned a very big bronze eagle trophy for the race. This was due to the fact that he was so confident Ernst Kuppers would win the 100-meter backstroke. Unfortunately, Ernst Kuppers could not win the race.
The race was won by John Besford and interestingly, Hitler refused to present the trophy to him. Hitler left the stadium and one of his officials was the one who presented the trophy to John Besford. The large bronze trophy that Hitler wished to have presented to Ernst Kuppers was said to weigh over 50 kilograms and stood at 3 feet 3 inches.
