German director of theater and film, Erich Gustav Otto Engel was born on February 14, 1891, and died on May 10, 1966.
Actor Engel was trained at the School of Applied Arts and was born in Hamburg. Before relocating to Berlin in 1924, he was employed as a dramaturg at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus and Hamburger Kammerspiele.
In addition to creating Bertolt Brecht’s works, Engel rose to prominence as an interpreter of Brecht’s writings. His big break was the Dreigroschenoper by Brecht.
Engel started directing movies in 1930, specializing in witty and ironic comedies. In addition to serving as the Berliner Deutsche Theater’s theatrical director, he collaborated closely as composer and musical director with Theo Mackeben.
In 1935, Engel made the anti-authoritarian and militaristic film nur ein Komรถdiant in Vienna. After working in the DDR and directing multiple films for UFA, he was awarded the Nationalpreis der DDR for his productions.
In 1957, Engel made a comeback to the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, where he oversaw the debut of Leben des Galilei.
