The versatile Emmerich Hanus made a lasting impression as a producer, screenwriter, actor, and director in the early Austrian cinema business. His career included the pivotal years of silent cinema and the arduous post-war Austrian filmmaking scene, a testament to his dedication to the craft of cinematic narrative.

Emmerich Hanus was born in Vienna, Austria, on August 24, 1884. He began his career in cinema in 1913, appearing in silent films including “Der Andere” and “Die schwarze Natter.” Beginning in 1915, he not only developed his acting abilities in his early years in the business, but he also dabbled in directing.

Hanus’s partnership with author Karl Schönherr was one of the noteworthy features of his early career. They collaborated on the directing and screenplay for “Erde” in 1920 and “Glaube und Heimat” in 1921. Hanus’s ability to adapt literary works for the big screen was demonstrated by this collaboration.

After the Anschluss, Hanus quit the theater for a while. But Emmerich took another route and committed himself to banking work, in contrast to his brother Heinz Hanus, who joined the NSDAP. He didn’t realize that his film career may take a turn for the better until the end of World War II. His comeback to filmmaking came with the 1946 biographical picture “Seine einzige Liebe,” which was directed by him.

Emmerich Hanus was a key figure in the post-war revival of the Austrian cinema industry, having co-founded Belvedere-cinema in 1946 with Elfi von Dassanowsky. He oversaw the production of movies such as “Glücksmühle,” “Märchen vom Glück,” and “Dr. Rosin” in 1949; the latter two were made under the alias Arthur de Glahs.

Elfi von Dassanowsky described Emmerich Hanus as having a “gentle and reserved personality” that allowed him to overcome obstacles in his personal and professional life. An interesting aspect that persisted throughout their careers was the sibling rivalry he shared with director Heinz Hanus.
