Prior to representing Germany in various competitions, he was a member of the club known as ASK Vorwärts Rostock. He competed at the Summer Olympics in 1960, 1964 as well as 1968. For all these Summer Olympics, Egon Henninger competed in the 200 m breaststroke.
At the 1960 Summer Olympics, Egon Henninger placed fourth in the 200 m breaststroke. He also finished in the fifth position with respect to the 200 m breaststroke at the 1964 Summer Olympics.
At the 1968 Summer Olympics, he took the sixth position in the 200 m breaststroke. With respect to the 1964 Summer Olympics as well as the 1968 Summer Olympics, Egon Henninger placed second in the 4 × 100 m medley relay and took home the silver medals.
It must also be noted that he won three medals in the 200 m breaststroke and 4 × 100 m medley relay at the 1962 and 1966 European championships.
