The Council Of State in their efforts to resolve the recent disturbances that happened in parliament, have held crunch talks with the Speaker of Parliament; Alban Bagbin.
The minority and majority caucus in parliament later last year on December 20, 2021 had a misunderstanding over the passage of the 2022 budget. The disagreement led to a scuffle that saw some few punches being thrown and people being abused in the chamber. What caused the misunderstanding was the First Deputy Speaker; Joe Wise wanting to vote will acting as a presiding speaker, against the wishes of the minority.
The Council Of State is therefore trying it’s best to bring an understanding amongst the ruling and opposition members in parliament. The Chairman of the council; Nana Otuo Siriboe ll had earlier met both the majority caucus and minority in parliament.
The chairman emphasized that there was the need to settle these disputes before they escalate. Hon. Alban Bagbin also disclosed that; “…i cannot seat as a Speaker and see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil. That will be a adjudicating my role as a statesman. So I have an interest as the matter comes to the floor. And whether it’s against the left or the right, I will see it and that is what I’m committed to. I don’t expect any party to praise me because I can hurt both”, before the close door meeting with the council of state.
The Council of State shall also meet the two deputy speakers after their talks with the speaker.
