Coco Chanel’s Biography
Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was a French fashion designer and businesswoman.
She was born on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, Maine-et-Loire, as the second child of Albert Chanel and Jeanne Devolle Chanel. Chanel’s father worked as an itinerant street vendor, while her mother was a laundrywoman.
Chanel was committed to a convent orphanage at the age of 11 after her mother died. There, she learned how to sew.
Chanel left the orphanage at the age of 18 to live in a Catholic girls’ boarding house in Moulins. During this time, she began working as a seamstress and vocalist in a local cabaret.
Chanel’s sewing talent and distinct sense of style rapidly drew attention, and she established her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910.
Chanel rose to prominence after World War I, when she revolutionised women’s fashion by introducing a sporty, casual style that replaced the “corseted silhouette” of the period.
Her designs were simple, more comfortable, and less expensive, but still lovely. Chanel’s influence went beyond clothing; she also developed jewellery, handbags, and fragrances. Chanel No. 5, with its distinctive smell, has become an iconic commodity.
During World War II, Chanel was chastised for collaborating with Nazi-German occupiers and the Vichy puppet administration to advance her career.
Following the war, she remained in Switzerland until returning to Paris in 1954 to relaunch her fashion label. Chanel died in 1971, at the age of 87, at the Hotel Ritz in Paris.
