Christian Neureuther, a renowned character in skiing history, was born on April 28, 1949, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Neureuther was a former German ski racer who left his mark on the sport with his prowess on the slopes. However, his influence extends well beyond skiing since he has worked in a range of fields, including television star and environmental campaigner.
Early Life and Career
Son of a physician, Christian Neureuther blended his love of skiing with incredible achievement in his professional career. He first considered a career in medicine after graduating, but he soon concluded that skiing was his actual calling. Neureuther’s life changed to include skiing once he joined the soul group FBI as a drummer.
When he finished fourth in the downhill skiing competition at the 1968 German Championships, at the age of 18, he made headlines. His career would be marked by several athletic achievements, the first of which was this one. Twelve master titles came from his dominance in giant slalom; from 1974 to 1978, his dominance in slalom produced five victories in a row.
Going into the 1969–1970 Ski World Cup, Neureuther had high expectations as the greatest young prospect from Germany ever. However, the pressure made him trip again and over again, earning him the moniker “Sturzreuther” (Falling Reuther). Despite the obstacles, he persevered and won the steep Lauberhorn slalom in Wengen on January 14, 1973, to capture his first World Cup. This victory caused a drastic turn in his career.
After an incredible 1979–1980 season, Christian Neureuther, at thirty years old, announced his retirement from professional sports. Even though he was unable to medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics, his achievements and hard work had already cemented his place in the ski world.
Neureuther chose to retire in 1981 after making a brief comeback and finishing sixth in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen slalom. Interestingly, he turned down a “B license,” which is a professional skier’s badge.
After retiring, Christian Neureuther transitioned into several roles with ease. As a juror on the television show “Dalli Dalli” from 1980 to 1986, he showed his adaptability. His influence extended into the business sphere as well, as he and his spouse, Rosi Mittermaier, owned half of a ski manufacturing company.

The legendary skier contracted early summer meningoencephalitis, a serious and potentially fatal disease affecting the meninges and brain, after being bitten by a tick during the summer.
