The German author and actress Charlotte Hagenbruch lived from 1896 to 1968. She co-starred in multiple films as the actor-director William Dieterle’s wife. Alongside him, she immigrated to the US in the early 1930s and then went back to Europe following World War II.

The daughter of merchant Friedrich Carl Otto Hagenbruch and his wife, Elsa née Seeger, studied acting at the Hoftheater Meiningen after finishing secondary school for girls in 1910.

Following appearances in Chemnitz and Nuremberg, she moved to Berlin in 1919 and began performing at the Deutsches Theater.

There, she portrayed a variety of roles, including Gretchen in Faust, Liza in The Living Corpse of Tolstoy, Lulu in Frank Wedekind’s Pandora’s Box, Elisabeth von Valois in Don Carlos, Ophelia in Hamlet, Desdemona in Othello, and Imogen in Cymbeline. She had a few silent cinema appearances as well.

She later married Wilhelm Dieterle, an actor and director, in 1921. She met him at this time. She now focuses mostly on his work as a film director.

She established Charha-Film GmbH, a production firm, in February 1925. In addition to acting twice more, she created the screenplay for several of Dieterle’s early directorial endeavors.

She moved to the United States in 1930 with him, where she worked in Hollywood as an acting instructor, manager, and advisor for her husband’s German-speaking emigrants during the Nazi regime.

The 28th of May, 1937, marked her US citizenship. She and Dieterle moved back to Europe in 1958, where they settled in the Principality of Liechtenstein.

At the Cantonal Hospital in Grabs, Charlotte Hagenbruch-Dieterle suffered a fractured femoral neck, which led to her death from renal failure and cardiac arrest.
