Charles Laughton was born on July 1, 1899, and he was an English actor. He had his education at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He made his first appearance on stage in 1926 and in 1927, he got a role in a play with Elsa Lanchester, who later became his wife.
He was featured in some films in Broadway and then in Hollywood. He collaborated with Alexander Korda on notable British films of the era which included The Private Life of Henry VIII. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the role he played in The Private Life of Henry VIII.
Some of his biggest film hits were The Barretts of Wimpole Street, Mutiny on the Bounty, Ruggles of Red Gap, Jamaica Inn, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Big Clock, and Witness for the Prosecution.
In the latter years of his career, Charles Laughton took to stage directing and he directed The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, The Night of the Hunter, as well as Don Juan in Hell.
Charles Laughton was the host of CBS’s The Ed Sullivan Show when Elvis Presley appeared on the show. He was the temporary host then on September 9, 1956.
The show recorded 60.7 million viewers. He also hosted “Festival of Music” which was streamed on NBC television anthology series Producers’ Showcase.
Charles Laughton began a relationship with Elsa Lanchester in 1927 and they got married in 1929. Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester became US citizens in 1950. They appeared in several films and some of them include Rembrandt (1936), Tales of Manhattan (1942) and The Big Clock (1948).
They also featured in The Private Life of Henry VIII and they both received Academy Award nominations for their performances in Witness for the Prosecution (1957)—Laughton for Best Actor, and Lanchester for Best Supporting Actress—but neither won.
Charles Laughton Cause of Death
Charles Laughton died on December 15, 1962. This was due to renal cancer as well as bladder cancer.
Earlier in 1962, Charles Laughton reported at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital with a ruptured disc. A surgery was undertaken for the collapse of a vertebra. He was informed of his cancer of the spine.
After leaving the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital In November, he went into a coma before eventually dying. The ashes of Charles Laughton were interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills)
Awards and nominations
Over the years that Charles Laughton was an actor, he received so many awards. He received the New York Film Critics Circle Awards for Mutiny on the Bounty and Ruggles of Red Gap in 1935.
Some of the Academy Awards won by Charles Laughton include 1933: Won Best Actor in a Leading Role, The Private Life of Henry VIII, 1935: Nominated Best Actor in a Leading Role, Mutiny on the Bounty, 1957: Nominated Best Actor in a Leading Role, Witness for the Prosecution. Charles Laughton also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard.
