Caroline Bauer’s Biography
German actress Caroline Bauer, better known by her stage name Lina Bauer, became well-known in the Biedermeier period. Born in Heidelberg, Germany on March 29, 1807, she was Heinrich Bauer’s and Christiane Stockmar’s daughter. Lottchen, Karl, and Louis were the names of Caroline’s three siblings.
Caroline entered into a romantic relationship with Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1828–1829. This prince would go on to become King Leopold I of Belgium.
The Duke of Wellington was reportedly drawn to Caroline because of her remarkable likeness to Leopold’s late wife, Princess Charlotte of Wales. Caroline claims to be the Countess of Montgomery and to have been married in a morganatic marriage, however, there is no hard proof for this.
In 1829, Caroline left Prince Leopold and went back to Berlin to continue her acting career. Theatregoers were split into “Bauerians” and “Hagnerians” as a result of her frequent matchups with Charlotte von Hagn.
Caroline left her initial connection with Prince Leopold in 1843 and married Wladyslaw Plater. Caroline tragically committed suicide in Kilchberg, Switzerland, near Zurich. The commander of the Polish Insurrection of 1863, Marian Langiewicz, was married to Marie Bauer, her cousin.
Numerous literary works have been written about Caroline Bauer’s life and love affairs, including the 2009 book “Caroline Bauer and the Coburgs” and her posthumous memoirs “Verschollene Herzensgeschichten.”
