Who Is Bryan Kohberger?
Bryan Kohberger is a 28 years old man who was detained and charged with four counts of murder and one count of felony burglary for the murders of four University of Idaho students.
On Friday, December 30 in Pennsylvania, suspect Bryan Kohberger was detained in connection with the killings of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, which occurred over seven weeks ago.
Kohberger, 28, was accused of committing four murders and one felony burglary. On January 3, he appeared in a Pennsylvania courthouse and voluntarily consented to return to the state to face the allegations against him.
By doing so, he waived his extradition to Idaho. On January 4, he was moved back to Idaho.
On November 13, four individuals—Goncalves, 21, Mogen, 21, Kernodle, 20and Chapin, 20—were fatally stabbed at a Moscow, Idaho, rental house.
Although Ethan was visiting his girlfriend Kernodle for the night, he was not a resident of the house. Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, two additional housemates at the 1122 King Road home, were there and unharmed.
The living room companions were disqualified as suspects early on in the investigation.
Mortensen and Funke were initially thought to have both dozed off during the attack, but the probable cause affidavit, which was published on January 5 following Kohberger’s return to Idaho, showed that one of the survivors claimed to have seen the assailant.
On the night of the killings, the flatmate heard crying and saw ‘a man wrapped in dark clothing and a mask’ stroll past her as he departed the crime scene.
Additionally, the affidavit claimed that Kohberger’s DNA and cell phone pings connected him to the crime site.
The charges surprised some people who knew Kohberger, while others showed less astonishment.
On Monday, Jan. 2, Kohberger’s family finally spoke out, saying in a statement to PEOPLE, “First and foremost, we grieve tremendously for the four families who have lost their beloved children.
We always pray for them since there are no suitable words to describe the pain we feel for them. As a family, we will continue to love and support our son and brother while also allowing the legal process to play out.
The statement continued, “In an effort to seek the truth and advance his presumption of innocence rather than judge unknown facts and make incorrect assumptions, we have fully cooperated with law enforcement agencies.”
“We respect privacy in this matter so that our family and the families who have lost loved ones can proceed through the legal process,” the statement reads.
A family member of Mogen’s told reporters, “It was amazing they caught him the night before their memorial — such a blessing and relief for all of us.” “That day, it brought a little peace.”
Frost continued, “It was one reason we waited to have a memorial. Kaylee’s parents had hoped a suspect would be caught before the memorial.”
Kohberger was charged with killing the four students in May 2023 by a grand jury, and he will likely plead guilty. His indictment permitted prosecutors to skip the June hearing that was originally planned, which may have included possible cross-examination of the two surviving roommates of the victims.
Kohberger was “silent” the following day while the court awaited his plea. He subsequently filed a “not guilty” plea before the judge.
Kohberger was “shocked a little bit” by the allegations, according to public defender Jason LaBar for Monroe County, Pennsylvania, who spoke to CNN.
Kohberger would renounce his right to an extradition hearing in an effort to move closer to his exoneration, according to LaBar, who represented Kohberger during the extradition procedures but won’t represent him in the criminal case.
He’s willing to waive since he anticipates being cleared, according to LaBar. He said those things. Saying he wants to be exonerated implies that he is innocent, whether or not that means it. He avoided using the word.
