Richard Otto Bruno Kastner made his mark in German film history in the 1910s and 1920s. At the height of his career in the silent film period, Kastner a screenwriter, actor, and producer became one of the most adored leading men in German cinema.

Biography

Bruno Kastner was born in January 1890 in Forst (Lausitz), Brandenburg, Germany. After completing his schooling in Fürstenwalde, Kastner had a brief stint in the military, cut short due to an injury. Subsequently, he journeyed to Berlin, where he took acting lessons from renowned stage actor Paul Biensfeldt and later performed at the Harburger Theater in Hamburg.

An unexpected turn of events occurred for Kastner during World War I when he was declared unsuitable for military duty because of a previous injury. Found by Danish cinema actress Asta Nielsen, he debuted in the 1914 comedy short “Engelein” (Little Angel), starring Fred Immler and Hanns Kräly, under the direction of Urban Gad.

With his endearing performances, Kastner cemented his reputation as a romantic leading man, frequently collaborating with actress Dorrit Weixler. Despite his slender figure and stylish clothes earning him the fun moniker “Kleiderbügel” (“coat hanger”) from male audiences, Kastner’s fame skyrocketed. He was chosen as “The Best German Actor” in a magazine survey in 1921.

Beyond only acting, Kastner also dabbled in scripting, penning scripts for movies he both produced and appeared in. “Nur ein Diener,” “Das Herz des Casanova,” “Der letzte Sonnensohn,” and “Der Weltmeister,” all directed by Erik Lund and published in 1919, are notable pieces.

One major setback came in 1924 when Kastner was involved in a potentially fatal motorcycle accident in Lugano, Switzerland. Even though he was in constant pain, he triumphantly returned to the screen in 1925.

Kastner’s career encountered difficulties as the late 1920s progressed. It got harder for him to move away from the youthful, alluring bon vivant roles that made him famous. He was successful in movies like “Die Brüder Schellenberg” (1926) and “Der Orlow” (1927), but the advent of sound movies in 1930 was a game-changer.

When viewers learned about Kastner’s stutter in his debut talkie, “Das Land des Lächelns” (The Land of Smiles), it proved devastating and marked the beginning of the end of his career. Attempts to revive his career, such with the 1930 film “Tingel-Tangel,” were unsuccessful.
