Brian Keith’s Biography
Brian Keith, born Robert Alba Keith on November 14, 1921, was an American film, television, and stage actor.
He was well-known for his roles in several films, television programmes, and stage performances during the course of his six-decade career. He was renowned for his ability to depict a variety of characters and for his diverse acting skills.
Keith was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, to stage actress Helena Shipman and actor Robert Keith.
His decision to pursue an acting profession was inspired by the fact that he was raised in a family with a significant history in the entertainment business. He received his diploma from East Rockaway High School in New York in 1941.
Keith enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1942 and served until his discharge in 1945 during World War II. In a U.S. Marine squadron, he worked as a radioman/tail gunner in the back cockpit of a two-man Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber.
He received various decorations in appreciation for his service, including the World War II Victory Medal, the Air Medal, the Combat Aircrew Insignia, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three combat stars.
Keith made his Broadway debut in 1948 as a member of the cast of “Mister Roberts,” which also starred his father, following the war.
Later on, he had additional television appearances, including ones in “Police Story,” “Robert Montgomery Presents,” and “Lux Video Theatre.” In the Western “Arrowhead” from 1953, Keith made his feature picture debut.
Keith had appearances in a variety of films and television shows over the course of his career. “The Parent Trap” (1961), “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming” (1966), and “The Wind and the Lion” (1975) are just a few of his well-known film credits.
He became well-known for his appearances on television in the criminal drama “Hardcastle and McCormick” (1983–1986), where he played a harsh retired judge, and the sitcom “Family Affair” (1966–1971), where he played the bachelor uncle-turned-reluctant dad Bill Davis.
Keith not only worked as an actor but also had his own television series, “The Brian Keith Show,” which ran from 1972 to 1974.
He took on the persona of a paediatrician who ran a free clinic on the island of Oahu. Additionally, he made an appearance in the CBS sitcom “Heartland.”
Keith struggled personally despite his success in the entertainment business. He committed suicide by shooting himself on June 24, 1997, at the age of 75, in his Malibu, California, home.
Along with his battles with emphysema and lung cancer, he also struggled with money issues and despair. Just two months earlier, his daughter Daisy, who also committed suicide, had passed away.
