As the lead vocalist of the legendary pop-rock group Tokio Hotel, Bill Kaulitz also known as Billy for his solo endeavors is a well-known personality in the German music industry. Born in Leipzig, East Germany, on September 1, 1989, Bill Kaulitz has made a lasting impression on contemporary pop culture, as has his identical twin brother Tom.
Early Life
Bill Kaulitz was born on the same day as his identical twin brother Tom, who is only ten minutes older than he is. Bill was born to Jörg W. and Simone Kaulitz, who divorced when he was seven years old. Following a 12-year romance, Simone later wed German rock band Fatun’s guitarist Gordon Trümper on August 1, 2009.
Early on, Kaulitz demonstrated a strong enthusiasm for music, which he shared with his brother Tom. Gordon Trümper, their stepfather, was instrumental in supporting their early musical endeavors and acknowledged their musical abilities. In multiple interviews, Bill Kaulitz claimed that he and his brother started composing music at the age of seven.
Career
Bill Kaulitz’s musical career began at a young age; by the time he was ten, he and Tom were giving live performances close to their hometown of Loitsche, near Magdeburg. Even though the crowds enjoyed their early performances, the duo performed only with a keyboard in place of a drummer or bass player.
The twins’ encounter with Georg Listing and Gustav Schäfer at a show when they were twelve years old was a turning point in their lives. Friends Listing and Schäfer, moved by what they saw and heard, invited each other to share in their musical adventure. As a result of this partnership, the band changed their name to “Devilish,” motivated by the statement that their music was “devilishly great.”
The ascent to fame began when Bill Kaulitz tried out for the reality TV talent program “Star Search.” After much work, the band finally had a crucial encounter with Interscope Records, a division of Universal Music Group, which changed the course of their career. They released “Schrei” (“Scream”), their debut LP, in 2005. Within a month of its release, “Durch den Monsun” (“Through the Monsoon”), the album’s lead song, soared to the top of the German charts, propelling Tokio Hotel to global prominence.
Tokio Hotel has maintained a devoted fan base throughout the years by creating music that speaks to them. Notable albums, partnerships, and tours have strengthened their standing as a well-known band throughout the world.
He has also ventured into voice acting and modeling, adding to his diverse portfolio. In 2009, he reprised his role as the German voice of Arthur for the sequel to “Arthur and the Invisibles.” In 2010, Kaulitz and Tokio Hotel collaborated with Kerli to record the song “Strange” for the film “Alice In Wonderland” and its accompanying “Almost Alice” soundtrack.
Personal Life
Bill Kaulitz and his identical twin brother, Tom, were originally based in Hamburg but relocated to Los Angeles in October 2010 due to security concerns related to stalkers and a robbery incident.
They found that living in Los Angeles was more conducive to their creative processes and closer to their manager, David Jost.
Notably, Bill’s brother Tom married supermodel Heidi Klum in 2019, and the two are close friends.
