However, encountering difficulties with her voice, she redirected her talents toward acting, enrolling at Max Reinhardt’s renowned acting school at the Deutsches Theater.

Her career took off when she secured an engagement at the Landestheater Stuttgart in 1925, making her stage debut in Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” as Lady Mortimer. Drews’s talent and dedication quickly garnered attention, leading to engagements at prestigious theaters such as the Munich Kammerspiele and later, the Volksbรผhne and the Staatstheater in Berlin.

In 1938, Drews joined the ensemble of the Berlin Schiller Theater, where her husband, the esteemed actor Heinrich George, served as director. The couple’s collaboration extended to the silver screen, with notable appearances together in films such as “Hitlerjunge Quex” in 1933. They were prominent figures in the cultural landscape of Berlin during the tumultuous years of Nazi rule, witnessing significant events such as Joseph Goebbels’ declaration of total war in 1943.

Her notable roles included appearances in films like “Anastasia, the Last Tsar’s Daughter” and “It Happened in Broad Daylight.” She demonstrated her range as an actress in Volker Schlรถndorff’s adaptation of “The Tin Drum,” portraying Oskar Matzerath’s grandmother Anna Koljaiczek.

In addition to her acting career, Drews made significant contributions as a voice actress, lending her voice to prominent characters in film. Her talents extended beyond the stage and screen; she authored her autobiography, “Where the Way?” in 1986.
