Following his graduation from Gifhorn High School in 1974, von Münchow-Pohl attended Göttingen’s Georg-August University to further his love of German and history.
He completed community service at Trinity Presbyterian Church in New York City while pursuing his studies. He finished his studies in 1980 and started working at the Lower Saxony State Police School as an instructor.
When von Münchow-Pohl joined the senior foreign service in 1986, he began his career in diplomacy by working at the Foreign Office headquarters and other embassies.
Among his notable positions were Head of the Germany Centre at the German Embassy in the United States and Deputy Head of Department at the Foreign Office. Von Münchow-Pohl was named Germany’s ambassador to Niger in July 2015, and then in 2018, he was appointed ambassador to Jamaica.
Von Münchow-Pohl began serving as Consul General at the German Embassy in Lagos, Nigeria, in August of 2021. He took up the role of chargé d’affaires at the German Embassy in Ouagadougou in the summer of 2023 after retiring in 2022.
