The late Anton Besold is still remembered in German politics for his unwavering dedication to public service and his contributions to the Bavarian Party and, subsequently, the Christian Social Union (CSU).
Biography
Anton Besold was born in Weßling, Upper Bavaria, on January 13, 1904. Anton Besold was educated at the Ludwigsgymnasium in Munich, where he was raised by a senior instructor. At Munich’s Ludwig Maximilians University, he later pursued higher education by studying law. He committed himself fully to the student fraternity Corps Palatia Munich in 1924. In 1928, Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen awarded Besold a doctorate in law. In 1930, he started working as a lawyer in Munich after passing the assessor examination.
The Second World War halted Besold’s career path, and he joined the German army (Wehrmacht) in 1941 and remained a lieutenant reserve officer until 1945.
Beginning in 1945 and lasting until 1947, Anton Besold was a member of the Bavarian Homeland and Royal Party. In 1947, he made the switch to the Bavarian Party, where he took on several senior positions. He demonstrated his organizational skills and dedication to party issues as the general secretary of the Bavarian Party from 1950 to 1953. Besold was elevated to the Bavarian Party chairmanship in 1953.
But in November of 1953, after the Bavarian Party failed to garner five percent of the vote in the federal election, Besold resigned from his post. He departed from the Bavarian Party on January 15, 1954, as a result. Interestingly, Besold was a member of a Bavarian Party faction that supported rapprochement with the CSU, demonstrating his pragmatic nature and flexibility in responding to shifting political environments.
Besold’s official admission to the CSU in June 1955 signaled a dramatic shift in his political affiliation. He was elected to the CSU state executive board in no time at all, and he served there until 1961. He also served as the CSU’s deputy district chairman in Munich and, beginning in 1965, as a member of the state committee.
From 1948 to 1949, he worked on community-affecting local issues while serving as a member of the Munich city council.
Besold was repeatedly elected to the German Bundestag in the federal sphere. He was in office twice: initially from 1949 to 1953 and again from 1957 until 1969. He served as the Munich-Land constituency’s representative.
