Much of his success as a ballet dancer had to do with his mother who brought up the idea of him to take ballet lessons. By the time he was 9, Godunov had already started taking ballet lessons and was class mates with Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Two years after he joined Bolshoi Ballet in 1971, he quickly rose to become a premier danseur and walked away from the Moscow International Ballet Competition in 1973 with a gold medal.
Although he was very active in ballet dancing, Godunov still made time for acting and appeared in a number of films. He is well known for films like Die Hard (1988), North (1994), The Runestone (1980), Witness (1985), The Money Pit (1986), etc.
He was a recipient of Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1976. Three years later, he went on a tour with the Bolshoi Ballet in New York City and for some reasons decided to seek political asylum.
He then continued with his ballet dancing exploits and joined American Ballet Theatre where he rose to become a principal dancer. However, his time there was cut short in 1982 after he had a misunderstanding with the director, Mikhail Baryshnikov who was his mate back in the day in Riga.
