Adriana Altaras is a well-known German actress, theatre director, and playwright who was born in Zagreb, FPR Yugoslavia, on April 6, 1960. Thea and Jakob Altaras, the activist’s parents, were Jewish and participated in the Yugoslav Partisans during World War II.

The League of Communists of Croatia threatened legal action against her father in 1964 for his efforts to learn the truth about his brother’s killing at the hands of Yugoslavia’s communist government.

Altaras and her mother took a car driven by her Italian uncle and went to Italy to get away from the situation. Altaras moved to Germany in 1967 after spending several years in Italy, where she studied Italian.

Altaras continued her education at the Berlin University of the Arts and then in New York City after graduating from high school. Her acting career began in 1982, and in 1988, she won the Deutscher Filmpreis for her performance in the movie “The Microscope”.

Altaras was a prominent figure in the theatre industry, having directed plays at several esteemed establishments like Berlin’s Neuköllner Opera and Berliner Ensemble. Her 2001 production of “The Vagina Monologues” featured several talented actresses and was a huge hit.

Apart from her career in theatre and cinema, Altaras was also a professor and interviewer for the Shoah Foundation, founded by Steven Spielberg.

She also writes columns for Die Zeit Online, a German newspaper, on a regular basis. “Titos Brille” (2011), “Doitscha!
