Early Life and Career
Adan Canto’s roots are traced back to a small town, where he was born and raised surrounded by the vibrant culture of Mexico. Crossing the border daily as a child to attend an American Catholic school in Del Rio, Texas, Canto’s early exposure to diverse environments laid the foundation for his future endeavors. His upbringing included riding horses on his grandfather’s ranch in Acuña, where his father worked as a charro.
At the early age of seven, Canto made his theatrical debut as a vocalist, encouraged by his mother. Throughout his adolescent years, he performed in and around his native state, immersed in traditional boleros and mariachi music. Canto left home at the age of sixteen to pursue a career in music since he was so passionate about it.
He began his career as a singer/songwriter in San Antonio and worked as the main vocalist for the jazz group Del Canto for five years while residing in Mexico City. During that time, he contributed his producing and songwriting abilities to the film and television industries.
Canto made his acting debut in a few Mexico City commercials before landing a part in the TV show “Estado de Gracia.” Upon moving to the stage, he was chosen to play the lead role in Pedro Almodóvar’s “All About My Mother.” This was the start of a career that would propel him to unprecedented success in the entertainment industry.
Adan Canto made his television debut in the United States in the Fox drama series “The Following” in 2013 as Paul Torres. Next year, he played Sunspot in the superhero movie “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Due to his skill and personality, he was given a regular spot in the ABC comedy series “Mixology” and went on to make cameos in other TV programs including “Blood & Oil,” “Second Chance,” and “The Catch.”
But his position as Aaron Shore in the political drama series “Designated Survivor” on ABC was what made him a superstar. Canto has shown his talent for portraying complicated personalities with delicacy and depth in his roles as the White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief of Staff.
He took a stab at writing and directing in 2014, making his debut short film “Before Tomorrow.” His artistic endeavors also included the founding of Canto House Pictures, a production business, in 2013. “The Shot,” his most recent film, is a historical drama that takes place in 1844 Texas and won many festival honors in 2020, including Best Narrative Short Film.
In 2019, Canto gained more recognition by costarring with Halle Berry in her feature debut as director, “Bruised.”
